Northern Power Systems (Waitsfield, Vt.), a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp., will build a 400-kW power system at Timberland's 429,000 sq.-ft. distribution center in Ontario, California.
The photovoltaic system will be installed on a steel structure in the facility's truck yard, providing storage space and shaded parking for employees. It's anticipated that the 1,960 photovoltaic modules will provide 60 percent of the facility's

energy needs.
"The proposed PV system offers a tremendous value, combining a sound business decision with Timberland's ongoing commitment to social responsibility," said Betsy Blaisdell, manager of environmental stewardship for the company.
In addition to electrical power, the system will be eligible for a $1.5-million rebate under California's Self-Generation Incentive Program. It will also serve as a hedge against potential peak pricing surcharges. Timberland will retain all of the green credits associated with the emissions-free generation system. Compared to fossil-fuel power sources, the solar system will mitigate the release of 935,000 lb. of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year.
